Half Set (with drones) Regulators (tenor, bass, baritone) upgrade It is possible to add a set of regulators (tenor, bass, baritone) to a half set of O'Grady uilleann pipes. To ensure the best fitting of reeds to your instrument, we recommend that you order regulators directly from Neil O'Grady. When they are ready, you would need to send the drone mainstock to him to have the regulators installed. Because cane
drone reeds can change their tuning with weather changes, Neil O'Grady
is now including synthetic drone reeds (with O'Grady half and full
sets), which are more adjustable and less subject to changes in the weather,
and provide for greater ease in tuning the drones.

An O'Grady set is an easy set to play. They don't take much air and are
slightly quieter than a Childress. The chanter reeds work well and adjust
easily.
A Childress set is a made with a great execution of traditional artwork in the tool work of veining and combing. The Childress set is a louder set with a well behaved bright sounding chanter. Cocobolo is about 6-12 per cent mellower, depending on the reed. The pipes we get from Neil O'Grady are Cocobolo. Blackwood is about 6-12 per cent brighter, depending on the reed. The pipes we get from B.C. are Blackwood. If it sounds as though the reeds are a large part of the instrument, they are. Talk to an oboe or bassoon player. It depends on which color of sound you like. The artwork is different between the sets. Childress is very traditional with more and O'Grady is rather Scandinavian with less. Both work well. All pipes work easiest with synthetic drone reeds. Both of these maker's sets have their own design of synthetic drone reeds.which don't create many problems. Childress pipes have more options for decoration and functional additions (5 chanter keys, chanter stop key, solid rolled nickel , maximum mounts and ferrules, pop valve, other mount materials, etc.) |
| We
do not have any uilleann pipes by either maker with cane drone reeds, as
they have both switched to using the synthetic drone reeds, which are much
easier to tune and maintain.
Synthetic drone reeds have the ability to play almost immediately when you take the pipes out of its case after not having played for a long time. Cane drone reeds usually would require an hour or two of adjustment in the same situation. They do not necessarily sound better than synthetic drone reeds and take much more time to get in tune. |
